Title: UNGC Local Network Coordinator
Job ID: 10497
Duty Station: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, United Republic of

Background
The United Nations Global Compact is an initiative, which started in 2000 in Davos Switzerland during one of the World Economic Forums, and involves the private sector, as well as civil society and non-business agencies to engage in the adherence to 10 globally accepted principles to make the world a better place. These 10 principles are formulated around 4 categories, namely: human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

So far, UNGC has made the effort in over 160 Countries to convince and inspire over 8000 companies and 4000 non-business stakeholders to sign up for these principles. In 85 Countries, local networks have been established to help these businesses and stakeholders to effectively address issues related to the mainstreaming of the 10 principles into their company/organizations and to report on their activities and progress (Communication on Progress CoP).

In Tanzania, despite a few companies and non-business organizations who have come forward as signatories, a local network which is effective and operational does not exist. These companies are directly connected to the Global Compact Centre in New York.  With the recent discovery of the potential economic wealth in natural resources, Tanzania is on the brink of signing agreements with large multinational companies to develop the infrastructure and use those resources. It is opportune to ensure that sustainability of the resources is ensured, and that sound social and environmental practices are mandatory for the use of these resources. Challenges acknowledged in Tanzania’s FYDP II, state ‘poor labour, environmental and social compliance standards’ across industrial sectors Therefore, it is the right time to introduce good corporate citizen practices into the Tanzanian Business environment. It is also the right time to advocate on the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) - a set of 7 principles for business, offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.

A easibility study was conducted in 2016, to assess whether the business climate is favorable to start up a local UNGC network in Tanzania.
